MODERN DRY PLATE TINTYPE WORKSHOP

June 6, 2010 - June 11, 2010

Join Jill Enfield for this exciting exploration of modern tintypes and how to convert old ‘Brownie’ cameras to use for the tintype process! We’ll spend the first part of the day converting cameras, learning about tintypes (modern and traditional) and making plates in the darkroom. These plates, unlike the wet collodion tintype process, can be taken on location and used in the field far from a darkroom. Modern tintypes are very similar to the historic dry plate process; a short-lived process introduced by Kodak in the late 1800s as a convenient alternative to wet plate photography.

These days you can do wet plate - which means you need a darkroom with you! - or dry plate in which you use liquid emulsion to coat and prepare plates ahead of time, use them on location, and return to the darkroom for development.

We will coat our plates and then go on location in the beautiful Montana surroundings and return to the darkroom to develop.

NORWAY WET COLLODION WORKSHOP

June 24, 2010 - June 29, 2010

A six day wet collodion workshop. Learn to make ambrotypes and tintypes using the 1860's wet collodion technique. This process involves the hand-pouring of chemicals onto glass to produce positives or negatives or aluminum for tintypes (positives) while the plates are still wet. The workshop will cover the basics from cutting the glass/aluminum to finishing the plates and learning how to mix and handle the chemicals safely. Jill will bring her portable darkroom so that the class can move around the Skrova area and shoot landscapes as well as still lives. While large format and Brownie cameras will be provided, check on your shelves and bring whatever you find.

To get to Skrova, students will fly to Bodø and take a three hour boat trip through the amazing landscape of some of the most beautiful parts of Norway. The workshop center in Skrova has two fully equipped studios, a darkroom, a printing lab, and two classrooms, one of which is equipped with a projector, and one which will be used as the gallery where we will have the final exhibition of the students' work. The center also has a restaurant where all meals will be served throughout the course of the workshop. Students will be staying in local houses for a fee that includes room and board.

ANDERSON RANCH WORKSHOP

July 11, 2010 - July 17, 2010

Alternative Processes in the Digital Age, a workshop at Anderson Ranch Arts Center. Early photographic processes present a compelling alternative to silver and digital prints. Using only fine quality paper, hand-applied emulsion and simple technology, learn to prepare paper and digital negatives for printing with cyanotype, Van Dyke Brown and kallitype. We work with digital negatives on ink press transparency media along with paper negatives, cyanotypes, Van Dyke Brown prints and kallitypes. We use Adobe Photoshop software and digital printers. The workshop consists of morning demonstrations and afternoon studio work sessions each day to allow students to work with all processes.
