NORWAY Old Technque = New Style

May 23, 2012 - May 27, 2012

This is a workshop designed for photographers who have never worked with the Wet Collodion process or for people that have and want more formal training in it. We will in addition to learning the technique cover the creative process and how you can use your new skill set to distinguish yourself as a photographer.

Creating negatives/ positives on glass/tinnplates requires you to carefully compose each image, which will inevitably affect the way you photograph. We will use antique cameras, such as Brownie Cameras, or large format cameras, (4 x 5 to 5 x 7) and instead of film we will use glass, or aluminum to create negatives or positives. NORDphotography will have some Brownie Cameras to lend participants, but we suggest bringing your own, if possible. A good resource for these cameras is e-bay. A good camera for the workshop is the Vintage Kodak Brownie No.2 A Box Camera.

The workshop will take place in a small community in the middle of Norway called Straumen. This is the area where NORDphotography is building their workshop center, which will open mid July. We will use the darkroom of Sund Folkehøyskole, and stay at Strømnes, a typical Nordic Farmhouse, where we have rented the main house for our students. In the off chance that SAGA is ready to be used in late May, we will have the students experience the center. Students will have to share rooms, each room has single beds.

MAINE MEDIA Wet Collodion: Ambrotypes and Tintypes

June 24, 2012 - June 30, 2012

In this workshop, students learn how to make ambrotypes (glass plates) and tintypes using the 1860's wet collodion technique.

This process involves the hand-pouring of chemicals onto glass to produce positives or onto negatives or aluminum for tintypes (positives) while the plates are still wet. The course covers the basics from cutting the glass/aluminum to finishing the plates and learning how to mix and handle the chemicals safely.

Using Jill's portable darkroom, the class shoots landscapes as well as still lifes around the Rockport area. While large format and Brownie cameras are available for use during the workshop, students are encouraged to bring their own large format or antique cameras.

SANTA FE Alternative Processes Portraits

July 15, 2012 - July 20, 2012

A great portrait explores gesture and expression. It encapsulates the moment in which both subject and photographer connect. That moment takes on a timeless quality when the portrait comes to life and is created using historical techniques such as albumen, Kallitype, and wet-plate collodion.

Our week begins with studying and discussing examples of 19th-century and contemporary alternative process images, and then focuses on learning techniques for the types of processes participants can create during this workshop. Our days in Santa Fe are filled with making portraits on location—of models and of each other. We then return to The Workshops campus and make digital negatives from our images and transform them into beautiful handmade contact prints on watercolor paper, using a variety of historical techniques including albumen and Kallitype. We also learn how to make wet-plate collodion portraits on glass plates, which can be used on their own, contact printed, or scanned into a computer to make digital negatives.

You leave the workshop with a thorough knowledge of these historical processes and a clear perception of how to incorporate them into your own portrait photography.

ANDERSON RANCH Digital Negatives and Platinum Palladium Prints

August 6, 2012 - August 10, 2012

Platinum and palladium prints are considered the crème de la crème of photography. Learn to craft digital negatives with stunning tonality to create prints with deep blacks, seductive highlights, and lush mid-tones. We make different types of digital negatives, from traditional transparencies to the use of matte medium and packing tape. Students create a collection of beautiful images and develop enthusiasm about the medium.

We use a variety of fine watercolor papers and vellums for platinum/palladium printing, covering variables such as coating of the paper, developers, clearing and post-treatment of the print. For our digital negatives, we use Epson printers with premium-grade transparency films.

Class time is divided between the digital lab and the classic wet darkroom. We also take two field trips where the instructor demonstrates shooting techniques.
